Sami Miettinen joined Viikon viisastelu — Ivan Puopolo’s weekly political panel, known in English here as Weekly Wiseguys — on 11 November 2024, alongside Tere Sammallahti and Finns Party MP Onni Rostila, a week after the US presidential election.
It opens on a cancelled school church concert and a precise question: is performing baroque music in a church the practice of religion, or is it culture? The panel does not claim to know, and then splits openly — one position defending cultural Christianity, another arguing that confessional religious instruction should be dropped from schools altogether in favour of the history of religions. Neither is reconciled with the other.
The middle section is about the American result and what Finnish commentary made of it. Two things lift it above ordinary media criticism: the panel praises a domestic analysis that explained the result without insulting the winner, and it names the same failure on its own side — “the message was good, it just didn’t get through” is what every party says after losing, and the more consistent reading is that the message got through. The write-up corrects one figure the panel overstates, and marks a rumour the panel itself labels a rumour.
A column describing a food-delivery platform as an extraction economy draws a clear answer about value chains, and the episode closes on the distinction it is most worth taking away: positive liberty is freedom to something, negative liberty is freedom from something, and much Finnish argument about freedom misses itself because the two are never separated.
