Finnish Financial Sector Stocks | Sauli Vilén | Negotiator 119
Originally published as “Finanssisektori | Sauli Vilén | Neuvottelija 119”
The Inderes financial sector analyst Sauli Vilén walks through the entire Finnish listed financial field, company by company: why a zero-rate world made non-life insurance an unexpectedly attractive business, and why most of Sampo's value is still If, whose 2004 acquisition was one of the best deals in Finnish financial history. Why the Nordics became the world's best insurance market, and whether this could turn into the decade of Nordic banks. The sharpest passage concerns Handelsbanken's withdrawal from Finland: Vilén calls a public announcement of a sale the worst possible opening in a negotiation, because it puts the seller in a fire-sale position from the moment it is made. Also Taaleri's structure and Garantia's fate, CapMan's turnaround and the Norvestia deal, Titanium's efficiency, Alexandria's stake-building in EAB, Evli's rise, and eQ.
Core theses
- Announcing a sale publicly is the worst available opening: from that moment the seller is negotiating from a fire-sale position it created itself.
- Zero rates made non-life insurance attractive for a reason that is easy to miss — the float stopped being valuable, so underwriting discipline became the whole business.
- Most of Sampo's value is still If, which makes the 2004 acquisition the single most consequential Finnish financial transaction of the period.
- The Nordic insurance market's quality is structural rather than cyclical, which is what makes a decade-long bank thesis arguable at all.

Summary
The Inderes financial sector analyst Sauli Vilén walks through the entire Finnish listed financial field, company by company: why a zero-rate world made non-life insurance an unexpectedly attractive business, and why most of Sampo’s value is still If, whose 2004 acquisition was one of the best deals in Finnish financial history. Why the Nordics became the world’s best insurance market, and whether this could turn into the decade of Nordic banks. The sharpest passage concerns Handelsbanken’s withdrawal from Finland: Vilén calls a public announcement of a sale the worst possible opening in a negotiation, because it puts the seller in a fire-sale position from the moment it is made. Also Taaleri’s structure and Garantia’s fate, CapMan’s turnaround and the Norvestia deal, Titanium’s efficiency, Alexandria’s stake-building in EAB, Evli’s rise, and eQ.
Never announce the sale
Vilén’s line about Handelsbanken is the most portable thing in the episode and it is not about banking. Telling the market you intend to sell converts a negotiation into a queue of buyers who all know you must transact. The price follows from that, and no amount of process afterwards recovers it.
Why zero rates helped insurers
Counter-intuitively. When the float earns nothing, an insurer cannot cover bad underwriting with investment income, so the discipline that was always claimed becomes compulsory — and the companies that had it were suddenly the only ones making money.
Sampo is mostly If
Two decades after the acquisition, the bulk of the group’s value still sits in the business bought in 2004. Stated plainly that is an argument about what a single good transaction is worth, and it reframes the rest of the conglomerate’s history as commentary on it.
