# Finnish economy +2.1 per cent — is this the turnaround? | Lasse Corin | Negotiator 401

## Summary

Aktia's chief economist Lasse Corin takes apart a forecast of 2.1 per cent GDP growth for Finland. The episode separates what in that number is real growth from what is a statistical artefact, why the fighter jet procurement barely moves GDP, what a rise in measured productivity actually captures, and why Finland's public finance figures are unusually hard to compare internationally — the pension system sits inside the public sector here and outside it in many comparison countries. Also covers the housing market, the tax wedge and what AI is doing to the forecasting craft itself.

## What the number contains

The episode's method is worth more than its forecast. Corin separates the parts of a 2.1
per cent figure that represent activity from the parts that are artefacts of measurement,
and is explicit about which is which. The fighter jet procurement is the clearest example
in the other direction: an enormous budget item that barely registers in GDP, because the
value is largely imported.

## Why the comparisons mislead

Finland's public finance ratios look worse or better than they are depending on what a
comparison country counts as public. The pension system is inside the public sector here
and outside it in many others, which is enough to move the headline share by a margin
larger than most of the policy arguments built on it.

## Note on the chapter list

The show notes for this episode carry 78 marks spaced on a roughly 36-second grid rather
than at topic changes, so no chapters are published on this page.
