- **RaTG13 and the copper mine.** The closest known relative of SARS-CoV-2, announced around February 2020, was collected in Yunnan and brought some 1,500 km to Wuhan with US taxpayer money by researchers including Peter Daszak and Shi Zhengli.
- **The WHO investigation.** Miettinen asks whether the WHO was in the loop or following the US line. Kuikanmäki's answer is that it is swayed by the two players most entangled in the Wuhan research, and points to Daszak's own appointment to the January 2021 origin team as the early wrong turn — a man who would be among the prime suspects had it been a lab leak.
- **DEFUSE.** The DARPA proposal, leaked by a whistleblower inside DARPA in autumn 2021, described inserting furin cleavage sites into viral backbones in Wuhan. DARPA declined to fund it as too risky but, he argues, sat on it for the first year and a half of the pandemic — which he counts as part of the cover-up.
- **Why this virus spread.** Its property is infectivity plus a long asymptomatic window, which gives it pandemic potential — unlike the first SARS, where shedding came after symptoms, so quarantine worked and the total stayed near 8,000 cases.
- **The scenario both find disturbing.** If this was engineered, increasing lethality while keeping transmissibility looks like relatively simple tinkering — and it arrives at a moment when nobody trusts the system, and with AI and synthetic biology in the mix.
- **The mice paper.** He recounts a June 2020 entry in which Fauci was troubled by a Chinese paper using 30-week-old humanised ACE2 mice, and did the arithmetic on when breeding must have started.
- **Fool or villain.** Miettinen puts the question directly. Kuikanmäki opens his book with Oppenheimer — *there are no secrets about the world of nature; there are secrets about the thoughts and intentions of men* — and says he now leans toward the villain reading, describing a two-faced portrait between the diaries and the public role.
- **Local truths.** Both dwell on how each country produced its own certainty: Finland's strict line and vaccine passes, Sweden's Tegnell treated in Finnish coverage as reckless, China continuing long after others stopped. Miettinen's point is the obedience, and that nobody has done a post-mortem on what he calls the mass psychosis.
- **The platforms.** Spotify, YouTube and Facebook removing lab-leak and engineering claims; Miettinen recalls fearing cancellation and losing his platform entirely, which he names a silencing effect — Kuikanmäki supplies the term chilling effect. His question: who tells the fact-checkers the facts?
- **The cost to trust.** The lasting effect both name is a generation that will not trust public health authorities — and no way for ordinary people to tell when authorities are lying and when they are right. Miettinen's version: we have run the crying-wolf test, and the next genuine emergency inherits the result.
