## Summary

Topi Borg — Tampere's Person of the Year 2025 and one of the four autistic young adults followed in Yle's series *Kirjolla* — talks about his debut book *Normaaliusrodeo* (Tammi, April 2025), and about films, series, saving and the strangeness of mutual understanding.

## The core of it

The guest's central observation is that neurotypical people take instantaneous comprehension of indirect communication for granted and do not treat a conversation that arrives at shared understanding as remarkable. To him it is always a miracle. The corollary he draws from writing the book is blunter: most human conversation is saying what you believe someone wants to hear.

Asked whether he prepares an answer while listening, he says he does not — he seizes the first instinctive thought, and has learned to throw some of them away because they would be too impolite. Directness, in other words, is work.

## Two disagreements

Neither is resolved, and that is what makes them worth listening to. The host repeatedly suggests putting part of the guest's savings into a low-cost index fund, and the guest declines every time, on the coherent ground that he will not risk money earned through hard work. The host then confesses to scrolling Wikipedia during films to check he has understood, and the guest calls it an insult to the viewing experience: bearing the confusion is part of the point.
